Replacing your roof is a very big step

If you are unsure about whether your roofing issue needs just a quick patching or a completely new roof, just ask us and we will send an estimator out to give you an honest answer based on the severity of your problem.

A new roof can be quite expensive, so you will want to be sure that it is completely necessary before spending your money.

No matter if you choose Cannedy Roofing or another contractor, here are some things to consider before starting:

What Kind of Material Do You Want?

Different types of materials work better with certain homes. You don’t need to go for the asphalt shingles anymore, there are many more choices nowadays to choose from. Think about what kind of material makes sense for both your home and your wallet.

Cannedy Roofing recommends the following for Sonoma County, Lake County and Mendocino County: (add, subtract as necessary)

Composition Shingles (asphalt)  -Most shingle manufacturers guarantee their products for a 20 year life, large color and texture options and one of the least expensive options.  This type of roof is also the easiest to repair, extending it’s useful life.

Standing Seam Metal Roof –has up to a 50 year life and is virtually maintenance free.  This roof is a little more expensive than basic asphalt shingles.

wood shingled cedar shingle home - roofing contractor in Sonoma County

Wood Shingles – gives your house a classic, rustic look.  More expensive than Asphalt, but with proper maintenance will last between 30 and 50 years.

engineered roofing materials such as synthetic slate and cast concrete shingles

Engineered Materials – These come in a variety of shapes, styles and are designed to look like much more expensive roofing systems like slate or tile, but are lighter, cheaper and more resistant to damage.  30 to 50 year life

How Many Years Have You Had Your Roof?

Life expectancies of roofs tend to vary depending on material. Asphalt roofs tend to have about twenty years of life. Anything longer and you may be pushing it. How long have you had your roof?

Replaced or Resurfaced?

Will the new roof be completely new or will it be built over you old one? Building codes today allow for no more than two separate layers of roofing. Depending on the age of your house and the age of the current roof, a simple reshingle over the existing roof may be acceptable.  If your existing roof is ruined and perhaps curling up at the edges making for an uneven work space, you should take the entire roof off to start building a new one.

Can You Get Referrals?

This is important once you have picked out which roofing contractor you want to hire. Every professional should be able to hand you a list of referrals on command. Feel free to contact any of the listed names to get an idea of what your contractors work will be like. Your roofing contractor may also have a list of similar projects that he has completed recently like yours. This can be helpful, especially if he has pictures, because it gives you an idea of what your finished product may look like. It also helps to build trust between you and your contractor.

Can You Trust Your Contractor?

One of the most common statements regarding roofing contractors is the fact that some customers have trouble reaching their contractors again in the future when any problems arise. This may be because the roofing contractor is afraid he will get in trouble at the thought of not building the roof up to par, but in many cases homeowners just want a check-up or something simple. If any problem does come up, some contractors will refuse to fix it for whatever reason. Make sure that if you get a list of referrals you ask how long ago their roofs were built and how they are doing at the present time.

Cannedy Roofing stands behind its work.  We will return your call promptly and respond to any issues and concerns that you may have.  We are proud of our work and want you to have the peace of mind of a job well done.

Before Starting the Job, Get a Contract

It is imperative that we urge you to get a written contact before any work is done. This allows you to know exactly what is going to happen during the building process and will also let you know exactly how much it is going to cost. If any new materials are needed and costs need to be added you need to write in the agreement that the contractor contacts you first to make sure that you can afford whatever he wants to add on.

Cannedy Roofing will provide you with a written estimate first, then a contract detailing all of the work we will do.  If we find any problems along the way, we will immediately contact you and work with you to find solutions to keep you within your budget.

It is Going to be Loud

This may be the most obvious thing to think about, but honestly it can be quite a problem. If someone in your household is already stressed or is having trouble sleeping at night, it may not be the right time to have your roof replaced. Getting a whole new roof takes quite a bit of time, and if someone is not prepared for two weeks of banging starting around six in the morning – they may be pretty angry.

To avoid any problems you should always check with each member of your household to make sure that you will not be interrupted any much needed sleep. Of course if the problem is severe and replacement needs to be done right away you may just need to purchase them a pair of ear plugs.
